Californian Cotton Candy

In our Winter Wonderland issue, we interviewed artist Will Cotton after falling in love with his beautiful artwork. His eerily lifelike paintings had a dreamy, vintage feel so we were so glad to be able to feature him and show his work off to all our readers.
Now it seems that ours weren't the only eyes Cotton's paintings caught. He has most recently created the artwork for the album cover for none other than Miss Katy Perry, as well being art director on her California Gurls video. She fell in love with his work after a friend pointed him out to her. Perry's album Teenage Dream is out late next month.

Long and latitude of it

Latitude festival has only been going for five years, but I’d recommend going next year without hesitation. I haven’t been to many festivals but easily preferred it to the likes of Reading. It’s very relaxed and family friendly, but has great parties until 3am for the older crowd. There’s easily something for everyone too from comedy to literature, to theatre and of course music. This year also presented the fabulous Central St Martins and Chelsea Graduate Fashion Shows, as well as a special Coco de Mer one, across the river; a stunning setting.
My favourite aspects were the comedy and music. Well-known comedians like Ardal O’Hanlon of ‘My Hero’ and ‘Father Ted’ fame, and Stephen K Amos, kept us laughing for hours. I actually preferred the Word Tent over the Obelisk [main] arena. The atmosphere was much more exciting and it hosted more of my favourite bands.
We chose to see The National over Florence as we’d seen her at Reading and were not disappointed, the ambience and music was amazing. Highlights of the weekend included seeing The XX, my favourite performance, and meeting Yeasayer!
New bands for me included Lissie, who performed spectacularly in a woodland setting, as well as School of Seven Bells.
Without a doubt I want to go back next year, we couldn’t fit everything in and had the most enjoyable time! Check out some of the great bands I’ve mentioned, and be ready to book next year’s tickets!

Bringing in the new Season...
The high street brands have been sitting up and taking notes from the high-end catwalks and have really gone to town for the upcoming season, our favourite picks so far have come from top-dogs H&M and Topshop.
Topshop
Taking inspiration from Britain’s ‘outdoorsy’ heritage we see a lot of heavy materials like tweed and leather being turned into fantastically contemporary pieces. Sheepskin and shearing is going to be HUGE this season, and Topshop have incorporated this brilliantly in the form of an oversized sheepskin cape, (sure to be a bestseller). Leather, faux fur and tailoring are also big themes, with every look accessorised with hunting hats and dark-berry stained lips. Tough embellishment on-top of floaty tea dresses gives us that Topshop edge we crave, while sophisticated blouses and fedora hats brings in some grown-up glamour.
H&M
A certain masculinity theme has taken over the H&M collection, with tailored suits, bowler hats and high-waisted wide-legged trousers stealing the show. A playful use of volume is also a major story, with oversized coats and capes being paired up with skinny grey leggings. Paisley print takes over billowing jumpsuits and scarf’s while corduroy shorts ride high on the waist. Leather teamed with sheer black pieces incorporate the glam-goth theme nicely and all with H&M’s usual inspirational quirkiness.
Excitement is certainly in the air for fashion lovers everywhere as we all embrace our slightly darker selves for a winter full of animalistic desires….(we can feel it kicking in already with all these beautiful looks!). We never thought we’d say this but…roll on Autumn!

Notice anything different about me?

According to a survey carried out by Andrew Collinge, former Hairdresser of the Year, women between the ages of 13 and 65 change their hairstyles an average of 104 times - that's twice a year!
3000 women were surveyed and it seems that we colour, chop, layer and curl to stave off boredom - and of course we're swayed by the celebs. We'll admit to hankering after a "Rachel" in the 90's, then a few years ago it was a "Pob", now it's all blunt or side fringes and choppy layers everywhere you look.
And of course there's been our fair share of hair disasters - from bowl cuts to DIY, we've certainly had our moments, but now that we've grown into mature young women, we like to think we've put our hair disasters behind us and have created our own styles to suit us. Not that we get bored of experimenting...
What's been your biggest hair disaster?

Acne opens first UK store

Acne launched it's first British store yesterday in London, on Dover Street. The Swedish brand was born in 1996, and first began life as an advertising agency and loose-collective, making film and music under the name “Ambition to Create Novel Expressions” ( So thats where the name comes from!).
Now established as a cutting edge fashion brand, they can now add their first UK opening London to their impressive list of 20 existing stores. Formerly a gallery space, the new store in Mayfair covers four floors with minimalist white space and artwork from the likes of Helmut Lang and Katerina Jebb.
The front windows are even covered in a collage of pages from the Acne Paper, the brand's bi-annual magazine, so it's definitely worth a peek!

This shit is bananas

You will need: 3 or 4 bananas and some lolly sticks Firstly cut the bananas into bite size chunks and push the lolly sticks into them. Then place them in the freezer with a freezer proof dish over them for a couple of hours or until frozen. Then serve! If you're feeling a little more adventurous, why not try adding your own toppings by dipping your bananas into some melted chocolate or syrup (be quick - it sets quite fast!) and then into dry ingredients of your choice. We like hundreds and thousands! Perfect for all those wonderful long summer days we're looking forward to! |
