H&M Rocks

H&M has released a new collection inspired by festival goers with 25 percent of the proceeds going towards helping benefit their annual Fashion Against AIDs event. The collection, which see's the lovely Lou Dillon, Josh Beech and Lizzie Jagger as the faces of the campaign, will include "ethnic inspired pieces with a glam bohemian bent for the ladies, and rock-star tinged skinny silhouettes for the guys. Think denim hotpants, patterned leggings, gladiator sandals, slim jackets and fedoras". There will also several festivial accessories including headphones,folding chairs, sleeping bags, and even a leopard-print tent!

Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s head of design says :

“For me, festivals are unique and inspirational places as they join both music and fashion. To see your favorite bands, to see creative people gathered, all from different nations and with different looks, really inspires me.”

The collection will go on sale May 20th in selected H&M stores.

She's come along way since foundations, and we're loving the new sound from Kate Nash. Mixing a new retro style with her infamous keyboard tinkling and a sprinkle of read aloud poetry, Miss Nash has got us dancing around in our seats. We're also loving the retro vibe in her new video, who wouldn't want to be a glamorous air hostess from the sixties!

Oh Cleo

Tonight as a part of its ‘Lates’ evening The Science Museum are offering a free Ancient Egyptian makeover workshop. Described as a ‘Nile style make-over’ the make-over focuses on cosmetics dating back to 650BC and uses an 18th dynasty beauty palette.

Before the sex kitten 60s updated the look, the Egyptians made famous the thick black eye-liner flick worn around eyes. The Egyptians epitomize beauty, their skills today can still not be matched. To look to them is to better understand where it started and what beauty can and still does mean to us today.

The lates night also includes debates about ‘ Why does beauty matter’ with The L’Oreal Young Scientist Centre exploring experiments. You can delve into what makes us so obsessed by beauty.

'Miss Selfridge for Gossip Girl'

The high street brand has teamed up withthe hit TV series Gossip Girl to create a collection of eight dresses based on the fashion styles of the four female lead characters - Serena van der Woodsen, Blair Waldorf, Jenny Humphrey and Vanessa Abrams. The collection was inspired by the designs of Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman and feature some stunning must have dresses!

The collection is available in their flagship store and online from tomorrow, and if you head down to Oxford Street at 9.00am to snap up the dresses you could even bag yourself a free Gossip Girl DVD!

I feel pretty...

So we were browsing through the papers this week and found an interesting article in the Times about the most influential films in fashion. The list was topped by West Side Story, and it got us thinking about some of our favourite fashionable films.

Grease

Now who can forget Sandy's sexy makeover at the end of the film. Plus we always quite liked the idea of being a pink lady...

Factory Girl

Sienna does a great job in the biopic of one of the coolest models ever, Edie Sedgwick. The film is full of sixties' glamour with fur coats, mini dresses and heavy eye make-up. Oh and Hayden Christensen. Need we say more.

Clueless

Definitely a firm favourite, who didn't love the film.... and the TV series? It was full of wacky 90's fashion that we all love to hate including mini rucksacks, knee high socks and lots of plaid. Everyone wanted to be Cher.

Here in the UK we are undoubtedly famous for our festivals, from Glastonbury and Bestival to Reading and Leeds, however each April, Indio, California give us a run for our money with Coachella - California’s most famous music and art festival.


A throbbing heart in the middle of the desert and surrounded by palm trees and mountains, it is one of the most beautifully located festivals. Only a few hours drive from LA, it's a favourite among celebrities, and is the place to be - from the live music all day into the evening, Lacoste’s pool party, the farmer’s market, a tesla coil, bamboo starscraper and huge flower lights.


Held at The Empire Polo Club over the past weekend, some of the best acts from all four corners of the music industry found their way through the sand to perform. This year’s line-up included MGMT, Florence and the Machine, De La Soul, The Big Pink and David Guetta.

However, Jay- Z made Friday night when he brought out his wife as a surprise for the loyal crowds. With a loving introduction ‘someone truly, truly special’ and wearing some Daisy Dukes, and a baggy white T-shirt Beyonce came on stage to deafening screams to belt out ‘Forever Young’ with her husband. Jay-Z summed up the Coachella vibe when he told the crowds ‘Always feel like this, always stay forever young.’

Each year the fashion pays homage to the upcoming S/S trends- this year showed prints from clashing African styles on Whitney Port to Aztec on Katy Perry. Mischa Barton and Dita Von Teese chose nautical with Teese in Popeye-style sailor bell-bottoms and Barton sporting an anchor and stripes manicure. Alexa Chung chose pale yellow for a playsuit, while short shorts were the choice of Lindsay Lohan and Hayden Panettiere for showing off perfect tanned pins.

2010 was not short of the usual A-list guests with an array of celebrities in attendance. From Kate Hudson to model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley with her new beau Jason Statham, to Hills star Kristen Cavallari. Zooey Deschanel performed with her band She & Him, while Agness Deyn showed off her new shaven hair-do. Danny Devito met and hung out with MGMT, while Josh Harnett took a ride on a mechanical bull in a red-checked shirt, rolled up jeans, and deck shoes.


Coachella is definitely one of the most relaxed festivals, with a who’s who of actors and models, a line-up to die for, and events and parties throughout. The day is blistering hot, the nights chilled, but the atmosphere electric. Whilst it may be all the way in the Californian desert, we think it is definitely worth the trip!

You think you've seen it all. You haven't seen anything yet...

Good news for the girls - the Sex and the City 2 trailer has been extended to two and a half decadent, designer-filled minutes! Set to Alicia Keys’ Empire State of Mind, the fast-paced trailer is set 2 years on from SATC 1- showing that it's not just about great clothes and cocktails. We see Charlotte struggling to cope with motherhood, Miranda surprising herself by doing well at it, Samantha back to her old man-eating ways (that we all missed so much in the first film) and Carrie struggling to keep the ‘za- za- zoo’ alive in her marriage to Big.



Scenes show Big flirting with another woman, Carrie dressed as (what my guess is) best man at Stanford’s wedding, Samantha dune-hopping, Charlotte cupcake making and Miranda making it on time to see Brady win a school prize.

While the beautiful cinematography of New York is what makes Sex and The City, the movie wouldn’t be complete without taking a trip abroad - to exotic Abu Dhabi. In between camel-riding whilst looking fierce and drinking cocktails in the desert on Arabian cushions surrounded by muslin, Carrie bumps into old flame Aiden in a beautiful Arabian market. What follows can only be described as a long hug, Carrie in a dress slit to her thigh; worthy of a gulp from Aiden and the statement from Carrie to Big that ‘something happened.’

Penelope Cruz, Miley Cyrus and Liza Minelli all feature, alongside a huge dollop of beautiful men (I especially like the look of the quick flash of fist pumping guys at the pool), a great soundtrack and the usual witty one-liners. The fashion is more beautiful than ever before with Carrie dripping in Halston Heritage, to quote the film - ‘I can hear the decadence calling.’

One thing hasn’t changed; their unique friendship - and Samantha sums it up perfectly, ‘We made a deal a long time ago - men, babies it doesn’t matter; we’re soulmates.’

With just over a month to go, for now the trailer will have to do. Meanwhile, I’m booking my flight to Abu Dhabi…

Sex and The City 2 is out in cinemas May 28th. Attendance is recommended in large groups of well-dressed, excitable females, before visiting a fun- filled cocktail bar!

Our Ramblings of a Jane Austen Addict columnist has just started writing her own blog. Expect to read about her take on love, life and culture whilst wishing she were about 200 years in the past and heading to a ball with Darcy. Here's a little preview:

What I had forgotten is just how crazy liking someone makes you. Or maybe it's just me? I find myself going out more in the hopes of seeing him, constantly looking around for him when I'm out and getting paranoid that he's in love with another girl if he so much as looks at her for a second too long. It's exhausting.

And then there's the constant "does he like me?" analysis, letting him know that you like him and figuring out what your next move is going to be, all the while spending near enough all day unwillingly thinking about them. Wow, I sound even crazier when I write it down.

Saving Grace

From Princess of Monaco and wife to Prince Rainier III, to style and film icon, Grace Kelly is one of the most revered cultural and beautiful icons of our time. Hermes even named a bag after the her- the ‘Kelly’ bag. And it’s not only Hermes that wants to celebrate Miss Kelly - the V&A are holding an exhibit in her honour. Photos by artistes such as Erwin Blumenfeld grace (sorry, I couldn’t resist!) the exhibition, as well as gowns, including her 1955 Academy Awards dress, and the Oscar statue she won for Best Actress for her role in The Country Girl.

Kelly was a well respected actress and loved by many, she counted Hitchcock as one of her mentors, and Josephine Baker as one of her best friends, as well as fellow actors Cary Grant and James Stewart. Stewart, after her death, said : You know, I just love Grace Kelly. Not because she was a princess, not because she was an actress, not because she was my friend, but because she was just about the nicest lady I ever met. Grace brought into my life as she brought into yours, a soft, warm light every time I saw her, and every time I saw her was a holiday of its own. No question, I'll miss her, we'll all miss her, God bless you, Princess Grace. She is timeless; so iconic she even appeared on a US stamp 11 years after her death. She remains one of the most beautiful, kind and respected actresses of both her and our time.

The exhibition Grace Kelly: A Style Icon runs from 17th April – 26th September 2010 at The Victoria & Albert Museum. Tickets are between £4 and £6.

Be Your Own Hero

Drew Barrymore's directing debut 'Whip It' is released nationwide in cinemas today. I was lucky enough to see a preview screening of the film recently, and I loved it. Before watching I was pretty skeptical thinking it would be another typical teen comedy, but I was pleasantly surprised.

To sum it up, Whip It is the story of Bliss, a seventeen year old from a small town in Texas who's bored with her everyday life and seeking adventure. While on a trip out of town she meets the rebellious roller derby girls, and decides to attend their try out session. She makes the team, and the story follows her through all the falls and bruises as she works her way up, attempting to lead her team to glory.

Featuring a great cast including Ellen Page, Juliette Lewis, Eve and Drew Barrymore herself, the film is a great success, something that will make you laugh out loud.. and maybe even inspire you to try on some skates of your own!

Cheryl Factor

Glamour have recently announced the winners of their best and worst dressed of the year award. Worst dressed naturally went to Katie Price who just seems to always get it amazingly wrong - pink velour and fake tan is never a good look.

But the best dressed spot was given to Cheryl Cole. One fifth of girl band Girls Aloud, Cheryl has been making a name for herself as a solo star as well as a fashion icon in recent months.

The pop singer and TV star beat Kate Moss and Posh Spice for the top spot, but is she really the best dressed star we have? I mean she looks great, but I've never really looked to her as a style icon.

The Easter Bunny
