Something For The Weekend

What’s the first thing most people decide to do on a sunny day? No, not strip off (although it’s close...!) but decide to barbeque. So you invite your friends round, do a trip to your local shop for coals (or a disposable BBQ), meats, drinks and salads, do another trip for everything you’ve forgotten (usually napkins) and then fire up the grill! By the time you’ve done all that, as well as  mix the Pimms and safely charcoal anything that could give you food poisoning, it’s usually around 5pm. Where has the day gone? And we’ve gone past the summer (summer?! when?) which means the days are just getting shorter and shorter. 

Well don’t worry, with the help of some solar powered outdoor lights, you can make the most of this Indian Summer and prolong your outdoor fun.  Coming in all shapes and sizes, our personal favourites include this simple frosted storage jar, designed to ‘collect sun, these pretty candle lanterns
and these colourful Chinese lantern style fairy lights - there is something to suit every household.  So with these lovely lights, there’s no excuse to party in the dark.

Prints Charming

Remember that scene in Garden State, where Zach Braff stands against a wall wearing a shirt that perfectly matches the wallpaper? Of course you do! And we bet that Twenty-Seven Names does too. 
For their Autumn/Winter lookbook they've created these pretty optical illusions with their pretty prints and matching wallpaper. I wonder if we'd get a headache if we tried to re-create this in our living room?

Fig Bruschetta

Fig season is rather short in the UK so we try to make the most out of it when it’s here. This weekend we picked up some perfect figs from Borough Market and thought we would try a bruschetta dish on honeycomb bread. The sticky sweetness of the honey and red onion could really do with a salty contrast, this is where the addition of speck, a kind of cured, salted ham, works so well. Feel free to swap the ricotta for a more punchy goats curd or a salty feta. This dish makes a great brunch, a kind of grown up pancakes and bacon if you like!   

You'll need:
30g/1oz unsalted butter 
1 fig, quartered or sliced 
1 slice of speck or Parma ham 
¼ red onion finely sliced 
3 tbsp. honey 
1 slice of bread, toasted 
Large dollop of ricotta, drizzle of olive oil and black pepper to serve  

 -Melt the butter gently over a low heat  then add the fig pieces. - Add the honey and red onions (red onion can be substituted for about 50g of walnuts)

-Spoon the fig and onion mixture onto the toast. Then using the same sticky honey pan quickly fry the speck or Parma ham until the edges crisp.

- Place the speck on top of the figs  and top with a dollop of ricotta, drizzle of olive oil and black pepper

Meet... Tick Tock Vintage

We meet another wonderful blogger for our next installment of our Meet the Blogger series. This time we chat to Veronika  from Tick Tock Vintage. We love her effortless writing style, not to mention her covetable collection of gorgeous dresses! 
Read on to find out more about the girl behind the blog... 

Ok, first up who is Tick Tock Vintage?  
Well, I'm a 24 year old gal that lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I'm a third grade teacher at a school in north Philadelphia. I live with my husband, our three dogs (Oliver, Louie, and Henry), cat (Meow), and rabbit (Peter). I'm an avid runner and cyclist, and I love doing outdoor sports and activities. I also bake and work on sewing projects (mostly restyling thrift store finds). I like long hair, deep sea life, rural Pennsylvania, 1960's fashion, and bicycles.

How long have you been blogging, and what made you want start it in the first place
Before I started grad school, I worked a really awful job doing web analytics for a huge company. I absolutely hated it and the day seemed to drag on. Blogging gave me a way to pass the time!

What inspires your blog posts?
My outfit posts are inspired by all sorts of things: vintage advertisements, movies, my friends, other bloggers, whatever I find while thrifting, etc. I also post about Philadelphia a lot, since I really love the city. I try to feature parts of the city that might not get a ton of attention (like my neighborhood, East Passyunk, or Chestnut Hill). I also like to share random things that happen in my life, like meetups with Philadelphia Activity Club

How would you describe your style?
Scattered! I'm all over the place. I like super girly pastel vintage dresses, crazy shoes, bold and colorful
patterns, furry hats, and leather belts. I think I definitely dress with a vintage flair, I try to incorporate several modern pieces, or items from different decades to avoid looking like I'm on my way to a fancy dress party.

What three items can you not live without?
My denim jacket, brown peep-toe pumps, and any one of my vintage dresses.

What do you get up to when you're not blogging?
I spend a lot of time with friends and my husband, playing games or activities, eating together, or just enjoying Philadelphia. My pets also take a up a whole bunch of my time, too. School is also a huge priority for me, especially since I'm a first year teacher.

Tell us something no one else knows about you... 
Hmm. I hate swimming in bodies of water where I can't see the bottom. It freaks me out.

And lastly as we've just released our End of Summer issue, we want to know what's your favourite thing about this season? 
Aw, I can only pick one!? I love summer so much that it'd hard to choose! I guess my most favorite part of summer is that it stays light out much longer than in the winter. Darkness at 5pm is so depressing! I also love long bike rides, ice cream, beach trips, big slices of watermelon on the porch, and picnics.

Back to School

For us, September conjures up fond memories of starting a new school term - complete with our favourite task of buying a new coat, bag and shoes! However, now that we've completed our education we still have the urge to carry out this ritual every year (there's just nothing better than the feeling of buying a new set of notebooks and pens, we can tell you!).

So to indulge in this new term feeling, we turned to the Cambridge Satchel Company. They definitely tick all of the right boxes and make us feel like it's the first day of school all over again! They come in an array of gorgeous colours and different sizes - so there's something for everyone! Our favourite is the 11" Pillarbox Red.

Clear the clutter and make some cash

Is your wardrobe filled with clothes that you hate? Have you nothing (in the world) to wear? If this scenario reduces you to a screaming fit as least once a week then why not take action and get some spare cash to boot?

How? Ebay! We know that you all know about Ebay but this is our helpful guide to making Ebay really work for you.

Tip 1: Iron/buff/shine/polish the item you’re selling. Even the oldest, rattiest dress will look better when ironed and the photo is what will initially attract buyers.

Tip 2: Model the item.  How is anyone going to get an idea of what it looks like when you’ve photographed it flat? Instead, put it on and have some photograph you in the best light possible. It doesn’t fit? Have a friend model it instead. This seriously makes a difference.

Tip 3: Be as informative and accurate as possible in your description and include details such as measurements, length, material, zips etc.  Also mention if there are any imperfections too, it might put off some buyers but bad feedback will deter people more.

Tip 4: Price low.  People are more likely to watch a pair of jeans worth £45 if they are priced at £1, and there’s every chance that they’ll still sell for £40.  Starting them at £35 is like to drive people to the shops to buy a new pair without all of the Ebay faff.

An Autumnal Breakfast

Mixed berries topped with plain yoghurt and honey... granola with brown sugar and skimmed milk...toast spread with marmite and avocado... ah summer breakfasts. Light and healthy while satisfying enough to put a spring into your step!

Well get over it. Summer’s gone and it’s not coming back for a long time. We suggest you move on.
To make the process a little easier, let’s try a new breakfast for a colder morning. If this can’t ease you from your warm bed on a cold, gloomy and cheerless morning, nothing will.

Cellardoor’s Super Porridge

Serves 1
50g porridge oats
350ml of water (or milk. Or you can mix the 2).

Throw both of the ingredients into a non-stick  pan and simmer for 5 minutes, giving them a bleary eyed stir every minute or so to stop it sticking to the bottom.  You can cheat and use Oats-So-Simple porridge oats which means you can bung the whole lot into the microwave and go back to bed for 2 minutes (3 if you include an extra minute when you’re ‘letting it stand’)if you want, but they‘re more expensive.

Now THIS is the bit that makes the difference: Top with a sprinkle of sliced almonds, raisins, course brown sugar and a bit of double cream. Packed with fibre and protein, this will keep you full till lunch!

Meet... A thought is the Blossom

Blogs are a huge inspiration for the Cellardoor team, so you can usually find us trawling endlessly through our favourites on a lazy afternoon with a cup of tea. One girl we've got bookmarked is Starr, from A Thought is the Blossom, whose blog is a treasure trove of inspiration and beautiful photography.
 Read on to find out more about the girl behind the blog....

Ok, first up who is 'A thought is the Blossom'? 
A Thought is the Blossom is a small town vintage-loving girl who loves nerdy things like history and educational programming. I like to write, love taking pictures, and I'm also madly in love with the South.

   How long have you been blogging, and what made you want start it in the first place?
A little over 2 years now. I was a regular follower of all the vintage-selling ebay shops during the golden days of Myspace and decided to start my own shop and blog. I wasn't very good at maintaining a lucrative vintage shop, but keeping up with a blog was fun to me. It really helped me develop my personal style.

   What inspires your blog posts?
I'd say the internet is a big inspiration for me. Work from other photographers, models, designers, bloggers, you name it. There are so many cool people out there that I get inspiraiton from everyday.

   How would you describe your style?
It's definitely vintage and a little romantic. I love the shape of little girls dresses from the 40s-60s, and of course, lots of florals! For a while there I was only wearing whites and neutrals, but now I'm getting into color again.

   What three items can you not live without?
Baggy dresses during the summer, a cute pair of flats, and my Laura Mercier concealer.

   What do you get up to when you're not blogging?
I work a lot and I go to school. I have two waitressing jobs, alongside a job as the fashion columnist for a local magazine. I also do a little bit of freelance photography. If I'm not doing that stuff, I'm usually spending time with my boyfriend and our cat, Monkey.

   Tell us something no one else knows about you...
I'm not very good at keeping secrets...

The Sketchbook Project

We’d say we’re fairly arty types over here at Cellardoor, and always like to find ways to be creative – so we were really excited to hear about The Sketchbook Project, a global venture to allow everyone to express their creativity and share it with others.

The idea is lovely in its simplicity – just sign up and you’ll be sent out your very own 32-page blank sketchbook (made from environmentally-friendly recycled paper might we add), with a unique barcode on it. You’ll be asked to choose a theme – such as “hope”, “travel with me” or “the companion book” – from the various forty options available, and then it’s up to you to fill up your scrapbook in any way you want, using your chosen theme as a starting point for inspiration.

When you’re done, send it back to the project’s headquarters in Brooklyn, New York, where organisers are collecting every single sketchbook they receive. Then, in April 2012, the global tour starts – every book submitted will be displayed in large exhibitions across the USA, Canada, Australia and, finally, in London, England.   

The best bit of this project is that there’s no bias or judging as to which scrapbooks make it into the exhibitions and which don’t – every sketchbook, no matter what it contains, is put on show, making this a really inclusive project into creativity and the way it’s expressed by different people in different situations around the world.

Simple sausage casserole

Whether we like it or not, it appears that summer is well and truly over (did it ever begin?). And as much hope as we’re all holding out for one last glorious Indian summer weekend, we might have to start accepting the inevitable.  Apart from the excuse to give your wardrobe a winter overhaul, the only other excuse to look forward to colder weather is the food. Say goodbye to salads and an enthusiastic hello to stews, soups and dumplings! Before you know it, it’ll be mince pie time.  But before we get too ahead of ourselves (mulled wine anyone?) here’s a quick and scrummy recipe for something that will warm your winter-dreading cockles:

Serves 4 
6 sausages 
2 onions
 2 cloves of garlic 
1 can of chopped tomatoes 
1 can of butter beans 
3 bay leaves 
Splash of red wine and Worchester sauce 
 Olive oil  

Heat the olive oil in a deep frying pan and soften the onions and garlic. Turn the heat up slightly and then add the sausages, letting them brown all over. Add the tomatoes, bay leaves, red wine and Worchester sauce to taste. Simmer for 10 minutes and then add the butter beans. Cook for another 20 minutes (or for as longer if you need to paint your nails, chat on the phone, doll yourself up for a dinner date... Just don’t let the sauce cook dry).   

Serve with some healthy greens or crusty bread.

Drumroll Please....

So now that summer is finally coming to an end (albeit a very shortlived one) we can now present to you the latest issue of Cellardoor - aptly named the 'End of Summer Issue'.

The next little thing

Have you ever had the pleasure of trying to manoeuvre your book on the daily commute? It's not an easy feat believe us! If you understand the level of difficulty we're talking about then you might be just as excited as we are for Flipback books.

These handy little books, which are no bigger than your smartphone and made of super thin paper, open top to bottom and have sideways text so you can easily hold them whilst hanging onto the tube carriage. 

Titles that have already had the Flipback treatment include One day by David Nicholls, My Sister's Keeper by Jodie Picoult and Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell.
