What we're Listening To...

Following on from last week’s listening choice of the week, we’re introducing you to Pond! The cutting edge band from Perth, Australia have been around since 2008 and you may spot some familiar faces from Tame Impala – notably Nick Allbrook and Jay Watson.

What’s different about this band is that it was set up to be collaborative with members who could play and perform whatever kind of music they wanted. The line-up of musicians therefore frequently changes so there are no ‘set’ members. They started playing psychedelic rock but as time as gone on, they have now reached a more pop-influenced sound, especially on their last album Beard, Wives, Denim.

Unlike other psychedelic bands, Pond are talented enough to write interesting lyrics and produce music that really does sound like a psychedelic-pop band ought to. So many bands try to be ‘far out’ with their blurry-effect videos and spacey strumming and wear all the right clothes but lack the gritty psychedelic substance. On the other hand; these guys have an authenticity that not many others have! As NME has said Beard, Wives, Denim was one of the best albums of 2012 and dubbed them ‘Hottest Band in the World.’

Here is the video to Moth Wings from Beard, Wives, Denim – filmed on an iPhone – homemade and brilliant. Watch on…

Why not download (pondband.com) a copy of ‘Giant Tortoise’ from their album Hobo Rocket which is due to be released later this year.

Sadly they’re not scheduled to play any live gigs but you can purchase the band’s music on iTunes!
