Postcards from Paradise


Now while the summer seems a long way off, we couldn't help but dream we were in warmer climes whilst browsing the latest collection from Australian eyewear brand Sunday Somewhere. With their mix of retro shapes and modern colour palette, not to mention that amazing leopard print pair we have our eye on... it's going to be hard to pick just one pair!

Weekly Round Up

We’re almost seeing the back of one of the most relentless month (bye January) and after all that planning for 2014, what better time to put plans into action and explore some new stuff. Whether it’s a cocktail, cuisine, theatre or an exhibition, there’s lots to be sampled out there. Off we trot…



EAT some Peruvian cuisine at Andina. This is the Shoreditch offshoot from the guys behind one of 2013’s most poular London restaurants, Cevice. The d├ęcor’s fun and rustic and brunch comes in the form of a fab menu that includes toasted barley, linseed, plantain leaf, horsetail tincture, alfalfa sprouts and quince. Who says you can’t feast and not break the Jabuary healthy eating regime.

DRINK Gin in a Gin Palace. Yep, you heard that right. A palace that serves gin, plus it’s in a pie and mash shop on Broadway Market. The latest pop up to occupy the striking F.Cooke Pie & Mash, is Peter’s Gin Palace who claim, “It’s literally impossible to be depressed when you’re drinking gin.” We’ll gladly take their word for it and head on over to combat those January blues. Open Thursday to Saturday, from 7pm until late.

SUPPORT a small theatre. The Blue Elephant Theatre in Camberwell is currently showing Shakespeare’s bloodbath tale of violent greed and ego, Richard III. Directed by Gavin Harrington-Odedra, this is an original production and a great chance to get to know the theatre and enjoy a corker of a play.



INVEST in a new wardrobe staple from brilliant Ukrainian designer Yasya Minochkina’s S/S 2014 collection. Easy to wear but striking, this collection is modern but will stand the test of time because of Minochkina’s eye for structure and use of fabrics such as delicately woven silk. This is comfortably one of the most exciting collections we stumbled upon during London Fashion week and every piece is stunning.

LOOK at the two great speakers added to Liverpool Sound City (1-3). The Velvet Underground's John Cale and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore. This year’s conference is set to attract 45000 people to lovely Liverpool and it’s no surprise with guest speakers like that.



SEE the abstract and lithographic prints of Ellsworth Kelly at the Ingelby Gallery, Edinburgh until 11 February. This retrospective spans over 40 years and contains Kelly’s deceptively simple work. Kelly’s work is powerful and uncompromising, which is one of the reasons he’s one of a few remaining figureheads of American abstract painting.

ENJOY the work of photographer Viviane Sasson’s series Flamboya. Taken on her travels in Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia this photo set is striking and uplifting. Sasson has worked with fashion houses such as Craven and Misooni and her crisp bold style’s instantly appealing on the eye.

CELEBRATE Peckham Springs being back in action at Sassoon Gallery. A bar and gallery under the arches (with a BBQ in summer), they host a range of events and are open until late at weekends. See you there!

Meet... In the Frow

For the next instalment of our Meet the Blogger... series we grilled the candy floss haired beauty that is Victoria from In the Frow. The fashion and beauty blogger manages to juggle her time being a lecturer in Fashion Retailing with writing product reviews and posting her latest looks. Read on to find more about the girl behind the blog... 



Ok, first up who is 'In the Frow' for those that don't already know? 
Well I am Victoria, a fashion lecturer from Manchester who recently finished a PhD in fashion application design. In my spare time, I review and recommend the latest clothing and beauty products on my blog, Inthefrow where I post my outfits and product reviews.

How long have you been blogging, and what made you want start it in the first place? 
 I have been blogging for 15 months now and it has been a brilliant journey into the blogging world. I just wanted somewhere to provide my own opinions about products as well as new garments I had found, so I started my blog one night and never looked back.




What inspires your blog posts? 
 I'm inspired by a lot of other bloggers, youtubers, celebs and fashion in general every day. I spend a lot of time on social media and try to keep up to date with what is happening in the industry, so when I see something new, I can get writing about it as soon as possible.

How would you describe your style? 
 My style at the moment has gone quite sophisticated and sleek I guess. I'm often in skinny trousers with heeled boots or wedges and a cute coat. It's quite tailored, but generally I love to mix up trends and wear things I feel comfortable in, which means that day to day I wear entirely different outfits and styles.

What three items can you not live without? 
I couldnt live without an amazing pair of jeans as they are always my go to for a more casual day where I still want to look put together. I also adore my camel jacket I recently bought from Sandro - everyone needs a camel coat! And lastly I would say my designer handbag, at the moment I'm using my Mulberry bag. I just feel so much better knowing I have a bag I love with me.


What do you get up to when you're not blogging? 
When Im not blogging, I'm usually out eating with friends. Otherwise I am working out, watching Youtube videos, cooking or shopping.

Tell us something no one else knows about you... 
 Im not sure if no one knows, but definitely a lot of people won't. My face is on the Salt and Black Pepper flavour bag of Real crisps. I had much shorter hair back then and it was silvery white. You would never recognise me if I didn't say!

And lastly, as we're releasing our travel issue, we want to know your favourite holiday destination. 
 Without a doubt, I adore North America. I recently travelled around there for three months and it was the best time of my life. If I had to give specifics, I'd say that Vegas, Arches National Park in Utah, San Francisco, Chicago and Washington D.C were the places to see. But if you can travel around the entirety of it like I did, then make sure you do it!

NEW YEAR (NON) RESOLUTIONS – WHAT TO DO IN 2014


New Year is all about resolutions but these often involve giving something up or creating a strict routine that is difficult to keep momentum. It’s far more effective to make plans and set goals that are ambitious but achievable to start off the year on a positive note and prevent hitting February on a downhill slump. At risk of sounding cheesy, it’s better to invest time and energy into doing something enhancing like a new interest, gaining a new skill or simply decide to smile more than to attempt a strict military training regime, no-alcohol and raw diet (unless you’re Gwyneth Paltrow) that is.

You don’t have to throw money at the situation either. An expensive juicer or gym membership won’t get you out of bed at 6am or off the sofa on a rainy Sunday afternoon but the thought of having an apple at hand to enjoy on an early commute or the prospect of a long walk exploring a new park are far more likely to put a smile on your face. Make your 2014 resolution to be happy and start doing the stuff that gets you there. That’s it! Here are some ideas to get you started…




GET ON YOUR BIKE because it’s fun, good for you and surprisingly social. With cycling growing in popularity there are a number of bike clubs across the UK. The Radiant Riders are affiliated with The Shoreditch Sisters WI. There are also a lot of cycle cafes popping up - our favourite is Look Mum No Hands. Cycling and coffee and cake are THE winning combo for 2014. Trust us.


GET CRAFTY AND SOCIAL as there are a range of craft groups to meet new people and share skills. If you fancy taking up knitting try I Knit (who also meet for a monthly roast). It’s also worth checking out your local library. Drink, Shop Do is a great cafe bar where you can learn anything from the Thriller dance routine and clay modelling to vintage hair and make-up. It’s an absolute treasure trove of things to do!

GET SOME CULINARY KNOW HOW at a cookery class. Grub Clubs Skinny Bitch cookery class will take place next Thursday (16th) where ‘YES’ chef Tessa will show you how to cook a healthy feast that you also get to mingle over later.



GET INTO A GOOD BOOK or two, or three… There are plenty of book clubs to join to help spur you on and if you don’t find one near you then you can use online forums such as Goodreads  and The Guardian host a monthly book club. The Carnaby Book Exchange is a fantastic project set up by students from The London College of Fashion. Here you can peruse a range of books which you can take for free in exchange for a book left behind for somebody else to enjoy.  Whether you swap amongst a group of friends or organise a location to reach the wider public, it’s always a great plan to pass on a good book and keep the pages turning.

GET INTO LEARNING NEW STUFF at one of the UK’s many museums and galleries. Many city museums have regular late nights. The Science Museum Lates includes some great talks, a quiz and a silent disco, plus you get to play on all the exhibits once the kids have gone home.  If you find that something really sparks your interest then why not look into attending a course like The Art and Archaeology in the Mediterranean World  course starting on 15th January at Manchester museum or attend a lecture on Japanese culture at The Japanese Society. There are plenty of lectures online too, like the TED ones on Netflix or on Vimeo. Whether its astronomy, brewing, minerals, shoe design, architecture or philosophy; there’s something to explore out there. You’ll never be short of conversation!

GET OUT OF THE GYM and try something new like getting those torsos toned at a Hula Group, get anywhere anyhow by freerunning, learn to ride a  stallion or you could even try mexican wrestling.



GET A NEW WARDROBE for free. In a world full of an increasing amount of stuff, swapping is a great way to minimise waste and excess. We all have clothes we haven’t worn for ages and the new year is a great time for a clear out, so why not swap with friends or strangers? There are loads of swap events happening in town halls, pubs and various other locations across the country. The Grafton in London has a regular clothing exchange or you could organise your own swap with friends. It's a great excuse for a get together with none of the guilt and expense of a shopping splurge – yes please!

GET INTO CINEMA by going to one of the many film festivals happening across the UK. This kicks off with The London Short Film Festival (10th – 19th January), which takes place at a range of venues across the capital. There’s something to suit any taste whether it’s the Sheffield Documentary Film Festival, the eclectic British Independent Film Festival and East End Film Festivals or you could even discover a totally new culture at The London Korean Film Festival or Manchester Spanish Film Festival.

There’s a lot to see, learn, do and experience out there so enough ready and off you pop. Don’t forget to keep checking back here for ideas though!

Homemade granola



Whether you want a snack during the day or a breakfast with yoghurt or milk, homemade granola is great because not only is it easy to do but you can make it exactly to your own taste. Not chewy enough? Add more syrup. Want coconut? Just add coconut! You get the idea. Here are two of our favourite combos… 



Ingredients
Peanut butter, ginger and chocolate granola
100g rolled oats
Large handful peanuts
2 tbsp golden syrup
1 tsp ginger
1 tbsp peanut butter
50g cooking chocolate

Apricot, honey and walnut granola
100g rolled oats
Large handful of chopped walnuts
1 tbsp honey
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla extract
30g chopped apricot
½ freshly chopped apple

Method
-       Heat oven to 180C
-       The same procedure more or less applies to both the sweet and savoury granola
-       First you must mix the oats and nuts together
-       Then mix in the golden syrup/honey, the spice and either the peanut butter or the vanilla extract, depending on which one you’re making
-       Put the granola mix in the oven and bake for 30-35mins, turning the mixture over every 10mins
-       Approx. 10mins before the end add in the dried chopped apricot
-       Take out of the oven and let the granola cool
-       Melt the chocolate and pour over the sweet granola and let it cool
-       Store in an air tight container max. 2 weeks
-       Remember to chop up some fresh apple to have with the savoury one and add yogurt or milk if desired or eat without!
